Louisiana Hummingbirds

Species

Thirteen species of hummingbirds have been recorded in Louisiana - only Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas have hosted more, and only a few states tie our total. Only one species, the Ruby-throated, nests in Louisiana*, but in a typical winter seven or eight additional species come here in varying numbers. Two species have only been recorded twice, and two have been recorded only once.

Detailed information about each species may be found via the "Species" menu, above.

*On more than one occasion, Buff-bellied Hummingbirds have been seen in Louisiana during the breeding season, and it is quite possible that the species has bred here. No nest, however, has been found to date.
